WIRE EDM
Kessington Aerospace has a wide range of machining capabilities available to ensure that we provide quality, tight tolerance components to the Aerospace industry. One of our recent additions to our capabilities is Wire EDM.
An overview of the Wire EDM process
Electrical Discharge Machining, or EDM, is a specialized type of machining that utilizes electrical sparks to form metal into specific shapes. Wire EDM equipment uses a wire as the tool electrode, winding it continuously between two spools to keep the wire itself from eroding during the forming process.
To shape a part, the metal part is placed into a dielectric fluid, while the wire is fed through the submerged part itself. Then, an electrical current is run through the wire, creating the sparks that will ultimately shape the metal.
Wire EDM at Kessington Aerospace
Kessington’s wire EDM process is NADCAP accredited, meaning that our wire EDM process adheres to the strict, rigorous requirements set by the National Aerospace and Defense Contractors Accreditation Program (NADCAP). Their certification process is specifically tailored to aerospace and defense engineering and manufacturing, as well as related industries. The goal is to provide a standardized approach to conformity and auditing that strictly follows the requirements set for suppliers by government and industry leaders.
The benefits of Wire EDM
Wire EDM is an excellent machining process for delicate features, as it can remove excess material without exerting the strong cutting force that is characteristic of more traditional manufacturing. Because of this, and because the process is automated, there is far less chance of causing damage to the workpiece during manufacturing. This particular process can also accommodate particularly hard materials with the need for secondary, post-machining thermal treatments. This means there is even less stress that has to be applied to the part and less chances for distortion or damage.
